WHAT ARE OECTA’S SUMMER INSTITUTES?
The Summer Institutes are mathematics and technology sessions,
each consisting of 15 hours over three days, available to teachers in
Ontario’s elementary and secondary schools.
The institutes are offered by OECTA’s Professional Development
department, funded by the Ontario Ministry of Education. Upon
completion, participants will receive an OECTA PD Certificate for
their Professional Teaching Portfolios.
Sessions will be offered in Algonquin-Lakeshore, Durham, Halton,
Ottawa, Sudbury, Thunder Bay, Wellington, Windsor and York.

Three of our members, Shaun Sammit, Carl Cvetnic and Pauline McArdle accompanied a group of students from Notre Dame C.S.S. A little over a month ago, the media began to report the kidnapping during the night of more than 200 girls from their school in Nigeria, where they had gathered to write their year-end exams. The culprits in this crime? An extremist Islamic group called Boko Haram, whose name quite literally means “books forbidden.” This group has been rampaging throughout the north-east corner of Nigeria for some ten years, burning schools and whole villages, and murdering children, their teachers, and members of entire communities.
