DSPU Members March in World Pride Day Parade

IMG_7390OECTA was a registered participant in the World Pride Day Parade held in Toronto on June 29. 2014. OECTA’s participation at the event came about as a result of a motion approved at our Annual General Meeting held on March 10. The motion read as follows: “That the Association show its support for Gay-Straight Alliances (GSAs) and its lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered, two-spirited and queer (LGBTTQ) members by registering for and marching in the World Pride Parade on June 29,2014.” To be sure, OECTA’s participation in the event generated controversy and criticism. The chief critique being that OECTA was going against Catholic values by marching in the parade.
The intent of OECTA’s participation was to provide comfort and support to our LGBTTQ members and students who often feel isolated and marginalized. We can do that and support Church teachings on chastity and morality. The picture shows DPSU member and OECTA First Vice-President Ann Hawkins (left) joining with other DPSU members at the World Pride Day Parade. They are from left to right: Anna Mather (Notre Dame S.S.), Malcolm Hamilton (Notre Dame S.S.) and Pam Pereira (St. Thomas Aquinas S.S.). In the centre foreground you will find Anna’s baby Nico lending her support as well.
