OFL Calls for Poverty-Free Ontario + More

OFL Budget Submission Demands a Poverty-Free Ontario

When the Ontario government sits down to draft the 2015 budget priorities, the OFL hopes poverty will be front and centre. In its submission to the Ontario’s Finance Committee, the OFL laid out a strategy for targeting poverty at every level: from childhood to retirement.

OFL Budget Submission Demands a Poverty-Free Ontario

“Poverty transcends the acutely felt impacts on individual families and affects entire communities,” said OFL President Sid Ryan in his submission. “In short, poverty is unfair, unjust, and incompatible with efforts to build an equitable society. It is for these reasons that the OFL has focused its submission on recommending strategies to alleviate poverty.”

Among the OFL’s 15 recommendations is a call for universal childcare and pensions, affordable housing, free college education, interest-free loans for students, and comprehensive labour law reform.

Government Launches Review of Labour Law

This week the Ontario government finally heeded the call from the OFL, the Workers’ Action Centre and many others for a comprehensive review of employment and labour standards across the province. In welcoming the review, the Campaign to Raise the Minimum Wage focused in on the need for a $15/hour minimum wage, while the OFL chose to highlight the need to make it easier for workers to join a union.

“For many workers, joining a union is the clearest pathway out of poverty,” said Ryan. “Ontario must also remove the obstacles preventing workers from collectively organizing through union membership to improve wages, workplace safety, job security and living standards.”
