On behalf of the 2400 teachers in the twenty-two secondary schools who have sponsored this scholarship, I would like to congratulate the students. While the scholarship is a modest amount, it is important to realize that the faculty of this school supports you as a worthy recipient.
Oscar Romero made the ultimate sacrifice when he was murdered March 24, 1980 while celebrating mass. He was an individual who challenged the status quo of a military government protecting a rich and powerful minority.
Over 2000 years ago another individual on whom we base our faith made a sacrifice for which he was crucified.
Rosa Parks decided not to sit at the rear of the bus which was designated on a racial basis. She refused. This simple action was a flash point of the discrimination against African Americans. Consequently, America found itself facing the non-violent marches and protests led by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Challenging the status quo for the betterment of the human condition is never planned nor organized – it occurs through the simplest actions. While, no one can fully determine the impact of such actions when they occur, their influence is often felt for many years to come.
The Oscar Romero Award recognizes students who challenge the status quo for the betterment of the human condition.
